Looking at women’s magazines today, you would think that the term plus size fashion was an oxymoron. Usually, clothing for women my size is poorly made, plain, uncomfortable and unbecoming. I used to think that I was more likely to get struck by lightening than to find an outfit that actually flattered my figure. Designers make clothes with skinny people in mind, not women like me with full hips and busts.
It never made sense to me since the average American woman is 5’3” and 147 lbs. Why would size 14 be considered too large to be carried in mainstream clothing shops? My friends and I used to joke that there was a skinny mafia controlling the availability of cute clothes for women with real bodies. Emaciated fashion models and hungry work-out addicts were simply jealous that larger women enjoyed their lives and ate what they wanted. The skeletal Barbie dolls looked on with envy as we enjoyed our steaks, cakes and chocolate to our hearts content, relishing in our healthy indulgence. Limiting our clothing choices was their chosen method of vengeance and we all suffered under their hegemony.
If you go to a typical plus size fashion clothing shop, the skinny mafia idea doesn’t seem so far-fetched. The tops look like ruffled bed sheets and the jeans never seem to fit right. It all seemed hopeless until I took my quest online.
I finally found a site that makes plus size fashion possible and it no longer seems like a contradiction of terms. They have a beautiful selection of shirts, dresses, jeans, athletic wear, lingerie and more all made for real women my size!
